The White House has accused Russia of trying to undermine the upcoming elections in Moldova and the referendum on EU accession. According to the USA, Moscow spent millions of dollars to support its parties and disinformation on social networks.
“Russia is seeking to undermine Moldova’s elections and its integration into Europe,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. This is reported by news.ro.
“In the last several months, Moscow has dedicated millions of dollars to influencing Moldova's presidential election. We assess that this money has gone toward financing its preferred parties and spreading disinformation on social media in favor of their campaigns,” he said.
Kirby has previously accused Russia of trying to destabilize Moldova, saying last year that its ultimate goal was to bring a Moscow-backed government to power in Chisinau.
The incumbent pro-European President Maia Sandu will compete against 10 other candidates in Sunday’s presidential election.
Sandu and other senior officials have also accused Russia of trying to influence both the election and the referendum on EU membership.
