According to data from Ukrainian consulting company ExPro Electricity, obtained from operational sources, in May 2025, compared to the previous month, electricity imports to Ukraine increased by 3.6%, while exports fell by 40%, reports Logos Press. According to the company’s information, in May 2025, compared to April 2025, the largest increase in energy imports was from Moldova and Slovakia. At the same time, Ukraine continues to be critically dependent on electricity from Hungary, from which it receives 40% of its imports. In May 2025, Ukraine reduced its electricity exports by more than 40% compared to April, to 92.5 thousand MWh. Most of the electricity was exported to Hungary, accounting for almost 37% of the total volume. It should be noted that supplies were made both during hours of solar activity and at night, when consumption is minimal. Compared to April, exports to Moldova saw the biggest decline. The reasons for the decrease in electricity exports have not been disclosed. However, as energy expert Gennady Ryabtsev explained, although the European Union has increased its quota for electricity imports from Ukraine, Europeans do not always need ‘extra’ Ukrainian electricity. In turn, Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko noted that electricity exports from the country are only carried out if there are no restrictions for Ukrainian consumers. According to data from electricitymaps.com, as of the morning of 6 June, 77.45% of the electricity available in Moldova was imported from Romania (572 MW out of 739 MW), and 35.95% was exported to Ukraine (266 MW out of 739 MW).
