Home / Economy / Romgaz Becomes Natural Gas Trader in Moldova
The Romanian company aims to capture up to 30% of the market and intends to sell gas in Moldova at a higher price than in Romania.
A subsidiary of Romania’s state-owned Romgaz, the largest producer and operator of natural gas storage facilities in Romania, has obtained a gas trading license in the Republic of Moldova from the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) in Chisinau, according to profit.ro.
Romgaz Trading SRL was registered in Chisinau on 10 October last year, and on 13 January 2026, it received a trader’s license valid for 10 years, until January 2036. Romgaz’s entry into Moldova’s wholesale gas market coincided with a period of growth in gas imports from Romania amid extremely low temperatures.
Romgaz Trading Moldova is managed by Cristian Selaverdeanu, former head of gas trading at Romgaz and commercial expert at the company’s energy trading department. Previously, he held positions as advisor, expert and head of service at Romania’s ANRE natural gas market regulation department.
“According to our estimates, opening a subsidiary in the Republic of Moldova has the potential to reach 1 billion cubic meters (the country’s total consumption, ed.), and we could supply 20-30% of the gas imported by the state,” said Romgaz CEO Razvan Popescu.
Romgaz intends to sell gas in Moldova at a higher price than in Romania, where the company is obliged to supply gas to the population and thermal power plants at a regulated price of 120 lei/MWh until 31 March 2026. The company’s document notes that the difference between gas prices in Romania and Moldova, which exceeds the transportation tariff, creates an opportunity to sell gas in Moldova at a higher price. It also emphasizes that Romgaz’s gas production will increase significantly after the launch of the Neptun Deep project in the Black Sea.
