The exact whereabouts of former PDM leader Vladimir Plahotniuc are still a mystery.
“We did not receive an official response from any state confirming that Plahotniuc is on its territory,” Octavian Iachimovschi, acting deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, said on the program Cabinetul din Umbra on Jurnal TV.
“There are enquiries through Interpol. We are waiting to see if any member state confirms Plahotniuc’s presence on their territory. There is nothing Moldova can do, it depends on the willingness of the state where he is,” Iachimovschi added.
Vladimir Plahotniuc fled the country in June 2019, right after the Democratic Party’s loss of power. Currently, the former head of the PDM is on the international wanted list.
In June this year, “Our Party” chairman Renato Usatîi said that Vladimir Plahotniuc still wanted to return to the Moldovan political arena, expecting to come home in a year and a half.
The former Bălți mayor, according to whom Plahotniuc is in Turkey or Northern Cyprus, emphasized that the former democrat leader had been visited by “different characters, from former and current mayors to former and current district chairmen”.
