Acting Attorney General Ion Munteanu believes that 20 per cent of prosecutors are “toxic” and should no longer work in the prosecutor’s office. Besides, in his opinion, the vetting process carried out by the current government will not be able to clean up the system. The statements were made on TV. Asked whether he trusted his colleagues, the acting Attorney General said that he did not. “I don’t trust all my colleagues, and the biggest problem, from my point of view, is that this audit, unfortunately, given the realities, will not succeed in cleaning up the system. The most toxic ones intend to stay and fight to the end. In general, I think that 20% of the prosecutor’s staff should no longer be in office,” Ion Munteanu said. In his opinion, the mechanisms of the College for Discipline and Ethics, which is not functioning today, would be more effective in cleaning the system. “From my point of view, it would be much more effective if the College for Discipline and Ethics took action. Today there are about 1,500 procedures against prosecutors, which include dismissal from office for breach of ethics, discipline, etc. However, we still do not have even a functional prosecutor’s audit, I am not even talking about colleges,” the acting Attorney General emphasized.
