The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) condemns the recent decision of the Constitutional Court (CC) regarding the powers of the Autonomous Territorial Unit (ATU) of Gagauzia. The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova expresses its strong protest against yet another decision by the Constitutional Court aimed at systematically eroding the powers of the ATU of Gagauzia, reports stiri.md. The Socialists assert that this decision is not a legal act but a political man oeuvre aimed at the definitive dismantling of the foundations of autonomy laid down in the Law “On the Special Legal Status of Gagauzia (Gagauz Yeri)”. “Under the pretext of ‘bringing legislation into line with the Constitution’, the Moldovan authorities are systematically depriving the Gagauz people of their right to genuine self-government,” the PSRM notes. At the same time, the party accuses the current government of seeking to transform the Republic of Moldova into a “unitary state” in which the rights of the regions are ignored and dissenting views are suppressed through political institutions loyal to the government. According to the Socialists, such decisions deepen divisions within society and set a dangerous precedent, undermining the fundamental agreements upon which the unity of the state is based. The Party of Socialists calls on the citizens of Moldova, and first and foremost the residents of Gagauzia, to stand united in the face of this arbitrariness. We will use all lawful parliamentary and political means at our disposal to prevent these anti-state initiatives from being implemented. “Autonomy is not a gift from the center; it is a right won by the people. We will not allow it to be taken away,” the statement reads.
