The European Parliament intends to urge the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova to “Speed Up” passing of three “Gagauz draft laws”. Such a proposal is expressed in the draft resolution prepared by the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs. “The European Parliament calls on the Moldovan authorities to undertake additional efforts to ensure the earliest and final adoption of the Law on the Special Legal Status of Gagauzia”, reads the draft resolution about implementation of the Association Agreement with Moldova. Amendments and remarks to the draft should be made by September 7. We recall that the Legal Committee of the Parliament has completely modified three draft laws agreed by the working group of the parliament and People’s Assembly of Gagauzia. Subsequently, two of the three draft laws were adopted in a new version. This drawn the indignation in Comrat. At the request of the autonomy leadership, the People’s Assembly, President Igor Dodon returned the draft laws to the country’s parliament for finalization and noted that they should be adopted in their original form. Nevertheless, these draft laws are not regularly included in the agenda of the meetings. Meanwhile, both Comrat and international structures, including the European Union and the OSCE, insist on adopting a package of laws. All three laws became part of the work of joint working group of the Parliament and the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, which had a study visits abroad to study the experience of European autonomies.
