The positions of the Russian Federation and Ukraine are “very far from each other”, said the head of the OSCE after the summit in Milan. The proposal of the head of the German Foreign Ministry Maas to expand the OSCE mission was rejected by Sergei Lavrov. The disagreements between Ukraine and Russia were not conciliated after the OSCE Ministerial Council Meeting, which was held in Milan on Friday, December 7. At the same time, at the meeting, the representatives of 57 countries made a number of decisions, i.e. the protection of women and journalists. In the light of the aggravated confrontation between Moscow and Kyiv, the positions of the two countries are still “very far from each other”, said Italian Foreign Minister, Acting OSCE Chairman Enzo Moavero-Milanezi. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on the sidelines of the summit spoke in favor of resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict by expanding the activities of the OSCE observation mission, including to the Sea of Azov region. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has rejected this proposal as “unpromising”. As in previous years, the 2018 two-day meeting ended without a general final statement. Next year, the OSCE chairmanship will go to Slovakia. Source: DW
