The Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership with Russia, signed in 1997, will be terminated from April 1, 2019. The text of the law on the termination of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership with Russia was published in the Verkhovna Rada newspaper “Voice of Ukraine” on Tuesday, December 11, and enters into force on Wednesday. The law, approved by the Verkhovna Rada, was signed by President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on December 10. “Non-prolongation of the treaty with Russia should be considered not as an episode, but as part of our strategy for the final break with the colonial past and reorientation towards Europe”, he said on Monday, December 10. The Treaty will be terminated on April 1, 2019 because of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, which was a violation of this agreement, the law says. “The termination of the Treaty exempts Ukraine from any obligations to fulfill it and does not affect the rights, obligations or legal status of Ukraine, which arose under the implementation of this Treaty before its termination”, the document stresses.
