The withdrawal of Russian troops from Transnistria remains one of Moldova’s top priorities, said Foreign Minister Niku Popescu at a press conference in Moscow on Wednesday following talks with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov. “The Russian military presence in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova contradicts the principle of neutrality enshrined in the Constitution of our country,” Popescu said. “The withdrawal of Russian troops remains one of the most important priorities for the Republic of Moldova,” the minister said. He emphasized that Chisinau “welcomes the readiness of the Russian Federation to resume dialogue on the export and disposal of ammunition stored in the village of Cobasna.” “This ammunition poses a constant threat to the residents of the Republic of Moldova, as well as to the region as a whole,” Popescu said. “We also propose to discuss this issue in the near future both in a bilateral format and with the involvement of international partners, including the OSCE,” the Moldovan Foreign Minister emphasized.
