The Romanian Foreign Ministry demanded explanations from the Ukrainian authorities in view of mentioning Northern Bukovina in the speech by President Vladimir Zelensky on the Ukrainian Unity Day, the Observer reports. The Ukrainian leader spoke about century-old events and, in particular, noted that "a large territory of Galicia was taken by Polish troops, Northern Bukovina was taken by the Romanians, and Czechoslovakia took Transcarpathia.” However, in the English version of the president’s website, the word “taken” was translated as “occupied”. “The Romanian side needs clarification regarding the reference to Romania in a recent public speech of the President of Ukraine, and expresses surprise at this and emphasizes the need for a correct understanding of history,” the diplomatic press release said. The Ambassador of Ukraine to Romania Alexander Bankov has already noted that “the unpleasant situation is the result of incorrect translation and improper interpretation”, and apologized. The word “occupied” was replaced by “taken”.
