The European Union keeps a watchful eye on the electoral process, including the campaign, and will continue to monitor post- election developments, as well as compliance with the international standards during the November 1 elections. This was stated in an interview by the head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova Peter Michalko, zdg.md writes. The European official stressed the importance of holding free and fair, transparent and credible elections, first and foremost for citizens. Yet, the ambassador warned against past years’ negative phenomena, such as buying votes, using administrative tools, transporting voters, and expressed regret that the Chisinau authorities failed to amend the Electoral Code based on recommendations made after the presidential elections 4 years ago. “The recommendations could have been approved back in August, when this issue was raised by both international partners and me. It was time for their approval, even the Venice Commission commented on these amendments. But there was no political will. Unfortunately, we admit that the legislation is not up to the desired level. This is not the first time when we learn before the elections that legislative amendments have not been adopted and there is no longer time for their adoption,” the official said. As to the fraud risks, the ambassador argues that observers should closely monitor the process on election day and identify any irregularities.
