Moldovan President-elect Maia Sandu has advocated the Ion Chicu government’s resignation, which in her opinion, cannot cope with the coronavirus pandemic and the accompanying it economic crisis. "The way out of the crisis depends on medicine financing and I have already begun to work on attracting external assistance for. But the government must take care of its responsibilities within the country and, if it does not cope, let it resign," Sandu said on Thursday evening in an interview with Moldova 1 TV channel. She stressed that " country citizens do negatively assess the activities of the office," which, according to her, did not prepare additional places in hospitals, did not purchase the medical equipment necessary to fight the pandemic. Last week, Moldovan Prime Minister Ion Chicu warned that hospitalization places for those infected with coronavirus would soon run out in the country's hospitals due to a sharp increase in the number of infections. He stressed that the government does not intend introducing harsh restrictive measures, but urged citizens taking a more responsible attitude to their health, wear masks, as prescribed by authorities. According to Chicu, the republic is in 19th place in Europe in the number of people infected and is in the13th in the number of deaths from disease consequences. On Thursday, Moldovan doctors registered a record daily increase in the number of people infected with coronavirus in the country since the beginning of the pandemic, it reached 1,697. The total number of detected infection cases reached 102,894 (2.6% of the population), out of which about 90 thousand recovered, whilst 2,229 people died. Currently, 10,180 patients are undergoing treatment, out of them 253 are in serious condition.
