President Maia Sandu explained Moldova's silence over the case of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, which recently provoked new US and European sanctions against Russia.
She stressed that “the Republic of Moldova must engage in its own democratic processes, preserve its own democracy,”
europalibera.org reported.
In an interview with Free Europe on Wednesday, the president also said: “This was the advice of some people concerned about democratic processes in other countries. This is what they told us: “You care, first of all, about preserving democratic processes in the Republic of Moldova”.
However, Maia Sandu clarified that this silence does not exclude “a sense of solidarity”.
Recall, on March 2, the Biden administration announced introducing sanctions against high-ranking Russian officials. The sanctions included the head of the Investigative Committee of Russia Alexander Bastrykin, the prosecutor general Igor Krasnov, the head of the Russian Guard Viktor Zolotov and the director of the Federal Penitentiary Service Alexander Kalashnikov.
