If the European Union fulfills its conditions, Lukashenko “will put an end to the migrant crisis at the EU borders.”
Acting German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a telephone conversation with Alexander Lukashenko. The conversation focused on migrants on the Belarusian-Polish border, TASS writes.
The conversation was held in coordination with the European Union and partners in the region.
The German government considered it necessary to negotiate with Lukashenko to provide humanitarian aid to migrants on the border of Belarus and the EU.
“The German government refused to recognize the legitimacy of Alexander Lukashenko as the president of Belarus, but considers it necessary to negotiate with him to provide assistance to migrants,” spokesperson for the German Cabinet of Ministers Steffen Seibert said.
In a conversation with Merkel, Lukashenko put forward an ultimatum and agreed to stop the flow of migrants if the EU fulfills its conditions: lifts the sanctions and recognizes him as the legitimate president of Belarus. Estonian Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets stated this, Delfi reports.
“He wants the sanctions to be lifted, he wants to be recognized as president,” Liimets said.
If the European Union fulfills its conditions, Lukashenko “will put an end to the migrant crisis at the borders of the European Union.”
