The European Union fully supports a peaceful and long-term solution to the conflict in Transdniestria based on autonomy for this region with unchanged borders of Moldova.
This was stated by Josep Borrell, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on Tuesday, speaking at a press conference after the meeting of the EU-Moldova Association Council. According to him, the EU position remains unchanged in the context of the conflict in Ukraine, noi.md reported.
“The EU fully reiterates its commitment to support a peaceful and lasting settlement of this Transdniestrian conflict, based on respect for Moldova’s territorial integrity and sovereignty within its internationally recognized borders with a special status for Transdniestria. The EU supports a permanent dialogue between the sides in order to foster confidence and avoid destabilization,” Borrell said.
As previously reported, when asked about the prospects of launching accession negotiations with the EU after Moldova has obtained candidate status together with Ukraine, Borrell said: “As we know, the EU integration is an intensive, demanding and time-consuming process. Each country is evaluated for its merits and travels this path at its own speed, but I can say with certainty that Moldova’s future is in Europe.”
