A geopolitical opportunity to resolve the Transnistrian conflict will appear when Ukraine wins the war against Russia.
President Maia Sandu said in an interview for France 24.
“We believe that when Ukraine wins the war, there may be a geopolitical opportunity to resolve the conflict. The main condition is to solve it peacefully. For now, we are working to prepare for this stage,” Maia Sandu said in the interview.
Asked by the France 24 journalist whether Moldova’s accession to NATO is on the agenda, the president noted that Moldova has had a good cooperation with the Alliance since the first days of the war, especially in the defense sector. At the same time, the head of state emphasized the fact that Moldova is a neutral state, according to the Constitution, and the decision to join NATO should be made by the citizens.
“We have a good cooperation with NATO. It did not start yesterday; it started many years ago and we appreciate this cooperation. NATO helps us to strengthen our ability to defend Moldova. At the same time, we have a provision on neutrality in the Constitution and the majority of Moldovans still believe that the Constitution should not be changed,” Maia Sandu said.
