Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean and European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell signed a security and defense partnership agreement in Brussels on 21 May. Moldova became the first state to conclude such an agreement with the European Union. Josep Borrell said that this document will enhance Moldova’s resilience to various challenges. “Moldova has become the first country to sign a security and defense partnership agreement with the European Union. It will allow (us) to jointly address common security challenges, make our engagement more effective and explore new areas of cooperation,” Josep Borrell wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter). In turn, Dorin Recean expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the EU and praised the importance of the EU Partnership Mission in Moldova. He stressed that in just one year since its launch, it has become a reliable partner of the authorities in the fields of crisis management, hybrid threats, cyber security and fight against disinformation. “I am glad that we can rely on the European Commission’s help to build a European Moldova, just as the EU can rely on our country to create a stronger and more peaceful region for the whole Europe,” Recean emphasized. According to the authorities, the Security and Defense Partnership Agreement with the European Union does not violate Moldova’s sovereignty and neutral status.
