Ion Munteanu will not be subjected to vetting after winning the selection contest for the position of Prosecutor General.
The President of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (SCP), Dumitru Obada, explained to the press that Ion Munteanu has already been checked by the commission number two as he is a candidate for the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ). “According to the law and regulations, he should be sent to the Pre-Vetting Commission.
But Ion Munteanu passed the Vetting Commission number two. As a candidate for the SCJ, he has been verified by the commission number two,” Obada said, Noi.md reported, citing Radio Moldova.
At the same time, Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, who is an ex-officio member of the SCJ, said that the election of the prosecutor-general is one of the conditions for starting EU accession negotiations.
We shall remind you that the position of Prosecutor General became vacant after Alexandr Stoianoglo was suspended in October 2021 and dismissed in September 2023. So far, several attempts to appoint a prosecutor general have failed.
At the end of February, the SCP cancelled the results of the contest for the post of prosecutor-general, which was won by the deputy head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, Octavian Iachimovschi. The decision was taken after a member of the Superior Council of Prosecutors Olesea Virlan gave a low rating to one of the candidates without justifying it and then resigned.
It should be noted that on April 15, the members of the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) approved the report of the Pre-Vetting Commission of the candidate Ion Munteanu for the position of SCJ judge, postponing the interview, referring to the pile of documents to be analyzed. The Commission found that Ion Munteanu fulfils the criteria of ethical and financial integrity.
