According to the ex-president, the true goal of the referendum is not EU integration, but a constitutional change that may start the destruction of all the concepts that have served as our foundation for all these three decades.
The politician said that for 30 years, Moldova relied on the Constitution to preserve its independence, sovereignty, statehood, neutrality, Christianity and Moldovan identity. For 30 years, despite challenges and political disagreements, Moldova has been functioning and has had the Supreme Law of the State as a reference point.
According to Igor Dodon, now, on the eve of the electoral referendum organized by Maia Sandu and the ruling party in October, it is important for every citizen to be aware of the risks associated with any abuse of the Constitution.
“The PAS government intends to amend the Constitution after the referendum. This is the true aim of the plebiscite - not EU integration, but constitutional amendment. Nobody knows how badly the Constitution will be mutilated. No one knows what provisions and what new articles will be included in the text of the Supreme Law. Or which articles will be excluded. But we do know for sure that the PAS government can go for any abuse, any violation of democratic norms and any trampling of laws. And we are convinced that they will do the same with regard to the Constitution, as their actions are encouraged by external political factors that want to subjugate Moldova geopolitically and economically,” the former president claimed.
He said that, unfortunately, the 30th anniversary of the Moldovan Constitution may be its last anniversary as we know it.
“Because the electoral referendum organized by PAS may start the destruction of all the concepts that have served as our foundation for all these three decades - independence, sovereignty, statehood, neutrality, Christianity, Moldovan identity. That is why, thinking about the protection of the Constitution and the whole country, it is our civic duty to boycott this trap referendum. So that we don’t have to regret it later,” Igor Dodon said.
