A statement to this effect appeared on the website of the foreign ministry of the unrecognized Transnistria.
“Following Moldova’s plans to ignore the position of the Transnistrian people without even trying to offer to open polling stations on the territory of Transnistria, we note that in order to obtain the real opinion of all Transnistrians, we consider it possible to hold a referendum on the attitude towards the European Union on our territory,” press release says, ziua.md reports.
The statement says that the Transnistrian region was open for discussion on the parameters for expressing the opinion of its inhabitants since the referendum was announced at the end of last year.
“We expected an appropriate approach from the Moldovan side so that, in accordance with democratic principles and procedures, all Transnistrians would be given the opportunity to express their opinion on an issue that affects their future,” the statement said.
In the absence of such a dialogue, the unrecognized authorities in Tiraspol now consider it appropriate to organize their own referendum on relations with the European Union. Tiraspol stressed that such a plebiscite could take place “on the basis of an agreement between the parties, with the involvement of international observers and in compliance with democratic principles”.
“Enough time has passed to realize a simple truth: you cannot find a just and lasting solution to a conflict without taking into account people’s opinions,” the statement said.
