Former Justice Minister and ex-President of the Constitutional Court, Alexandru Tanase, claims that the current scandal surrounding the release of life-term prisoners is directly related not to the amnesty law itself, but to how it was applied.
“The amnesty law did not necessarily open the prison gates. Previous laws contained identical provisions. Olesea Stamate’s amendments did not create any loopholes”, said Tanase on the Pe făță program on Moldova 1, according to noi.md.
According to him, Article 91 of the Criminal Code, which provides for parole, has been in effect since the adoption of the Code and has not undergone significant changes. It also provides for the possibility of replacing a life sentence with 30 years of imprisonment.
It is important to highlight that on April 4, Olesea Stamate was expelled from the Party of Action and Solidarity, and the party is demanding that she resign from her parliamentary mandate. This occurred after amendments to the amnesty law led to the release of individuals sentenced to life imprisonment for serious crimes.
