President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine is not interested in partial EU membership, drawing a parallel with the fact that Europe is not interested in a “limited” Ukrainian army. Zelensky made these remarks at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin, according to eurointegration.com.ua. Journalists asked about the proposal for so-called “partial” EU membership, which had been discussed by the bloc. Under the plan, it would allow Ukraine to join the EU, but with significantly fewer decision-making powers. The President categorically rejected such an idea regarding membership of the EU, as well as NATO. Zelensky explained that Europe needs Ukraine as a strong and full-fledged partner. He also emphasized the Ukrainian army, which, in his words, nobody needs in a “light” format. “Everyone in Europe knows our position. We do not need a “light” version of the EU, nor of NATO. Just as, I believe, Europe and NATO countries need Ukraine as a fully-fledged, strong partner. They need our army, a strong army. Because nobody needs a “light” version of the Ukrainian military. What sort of defense would that provide?” Zelensky emphasized.
