The measure primarily concerns schools with a small number of students. Minister of Education Dan Perciun stated that the move is difficult but necessary in order to reduce disparities between rural and urban schools and to provide children with better learning conditions, rupor.md reports. According to Dan Perciun, the school reorganization process is necessary to improve the education system and raise students’ academic performance. He noted that maintaining poorly equipped educational institutions directly affects children’s chances of receiving a competitive education. “We expect around 100 institutions to be reorganized this year based on decisions by district councils. This is a difficult and controversial process, but in the end, it will help improve the quality of education. We are moving away from the approach where children remain hostages, often for political reasons, in institutions lacking even basic equipment, where there are not enough teachers and the same person teaches physics, chemistry, and biology. In doing so, we sacrifice children’s future competencies and then witness poor exam results,” the minister said during the “Cabinetul din Umbră” program on Jurnal TV. The minister also drew attention to the significant gap between the performance of students from Chisinau and those from rural areas. According to him, reorganizing schools with low student enrollment is one of the solutions for narrowing this divide. “The difference in exam results between Chisinau and rural areas amounts to 23 percentage points. While the pass rate in villages is around 60%, in Chisinau it exceeds 80%. In the Republic of Moldova, the place where you are born largely determines your educational and professional path,” Dan Perciun emphasized.
