Home / Society / Metropolis of Moldova Criticizes Use of Cathedral Image Under Rainbow Flag
The Party ALDE, led by former priest’s wife Arina Spataru, supported the LGBT community march by publishing an image showing a rainbow flag over the bell tower and the Nativity Cathedral of Christ in Chisinau.
In response, the Metropolis of Chisinau and All Moldova expressed deep concern and regret over the use of the image of the Nativity Cathedral of Christ in promotional materials for Moldova Pride 2026.
In its statement, the Metropolis emphasized that the cathedral is the main spiritual symbol of Orthodoxy in the Republic of Moldova, a place of prayer, communion with God, and preservation of Christian values that have shaped the identity and culture of the nation for centuries.
“Linking the image of this church with an event promoting views and behavioral models that contradict the teachings and moral principles of the Orthodox Church is perceived by clergy and believers as a manifestation of disrespect toward their religious feelings and the sacred character of this ecclesiastical building,” the Metropolis stated.
The Church stressed that the Orthodox Church of Moldova respects human dignity and calls for peace, dialogue, and mutual respect. However, it considers that religious symbols should not be used to promote ideological or social agendas that contradict the faith they represent.
In this context, the Metropolis called the use of the cathedral’s image and other sacred Orthodox symbols in promotional materials for messages alien to the Church’s identity and mission unacceptable.
It urged respect for the country’s spiritual heritage and the cessation of using religious symbols for purposes that contradict their true meaning.
The statement concluded with a call for mutual respect, understanding, and careful attention to values that contribute to social unity and peace.
