The head of state is convinced that the Ukrainian parliament has a constitutional majority to support his initiative. In September Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will submit constitutional amendments to the Verkhovna Rada, which strategic goal is the Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Poroshenko wrote on his Facebook page that “Amendments to the Constitution regarding the consolidation of our ambitions for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and NATO are on the agenda. I have prepared amendments to the Basic Law that will be submitted to the Ukrainian parliament for consideration in the new political season”. “There is a chance of collecting 300 votes in favor of the decision. I am strongly convinced in it. I will not allow anyone to revise Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic strategy under the influence of various external and internal circumstances. We also need to get rid of the Kremlin-dictated forgotten constitutional principles for the temporary presence of the Russian fleet in our territory. I have my response and suggestion on this topic”, Poroshenko stated. “I stress once again that constitutional changes are for those who still think it is a loop. That’s why the relevant standards should be fixed in the Constitution”, added Poroshenko. As UNIAN reported, on March 16 Poroshenko announced that he had ordered to prepare draft amendments to the Constitution regarding Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO and the European Union.
