An ally must be reliable, said Emmanuel Macron after Trump decided to withdraw American troops from Syria. French President Emmanuel Macron said he deeply regretted the decision of the US President Donald Trump to withdraw American troops from Syria. “An ally should be dependable in order to act in coordination with its other allies”, said Macron on Sunday, December 23, at a press conference during his visit to Chad. “To be allies is to fight shoulder to shoulder” the French president added. At the same time, he paid tribute to the head of the Pentagon, James Mattis and his statements, calling him a “reliable partner”. Mattis announced his resignation the day after Trump approved the withdrawal of American troops from Syria. “You have the right to work with such a minister of defense, whose views will more closely coincide with yours”, the defense minister said at the time.
