In 2019, Romania will chair the Council of the European Union. According to Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the European Commission, Bucharest does not fully understand what it means to lead the EU countries. On the eve of the six-month Romanian presidency of the EU Council on January 1, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker doubted the ability of the authorities of this country to lead the European Union. “I believe that the Romanian government has not yet fully realized what it means to lead the EU countries”, Juncker said in an interview to the German Die Welt, published on Saturday, December 29. Recognizing that Romania is “technically well prepared” for the EU presidency, he noted that Bucharest’s “prudent actions” require the ability to hear the others and a strong willingness to subordinate their interests to the interests of others. “And here I have some doubts”, added the head of the European Commission.
