The main reasons for the population decline, the Ukrainian minister called migration and the excess of mortality over fertility. In Ukraine lived 37 million 289 thousand people at the end of 2019. This is the result of the electronic test census, the Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Dmytro Dubilet said on Thursday, January 23. Dubilet called the main reasons for population decline in the country. According to him, migration affects it most of all - more people are leaving the country than they actually return - and there’s also a negative correlation between fertility and mortality. As another reason, the official called the "occupied territories". The census did not cover residents of Crimea annexed by Russia and Donetsk and Lugansk regions not controlled by Kiev. The calculation took into account the data of three mobile communication operators of Ukraine, the State Statistics Service and electronic registers together with the state register of individuals. As of December 2001, according to the census, 48 million 457 thousand people lived in Ukraine. For 18 years, the country's population (excluding Crimea and areas of the Donbass not controlled by the government) has decreased by 11 million people.
