EU Extended Sanctions against Turkey

The reason for sanctions expansion were the Ankara’s actions in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus, the EU said. The EU has expanded sanctions against Turkey for drilling operations in the exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Cyprus. This is stated in the Official EU Journal. “In light of the ongoing illegal drilling activity of Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, two people should be included in the black list of individuals and legal entities,” the text says. Sanctions were imposed on the vice president and head of the exploration department of the Turkish state oil company TPAO (Turkish Petroleum Corporation) Mehmet Ferruh Akalin, and his deputy in the department, Ali Koskun Namoglu. Recall that in November, the EU Council approved a mechanism of sanctions against Turkey for unauthorized drilling activity off the coast of Cyprus. Then in Turkey they said  they would continue exploration of deposits near Cyprus in spite of EU sanctions.
