Dmitry Peskov criticized the US readiness to impose new sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Earlier, the US ambassador to Germany announced their possible adoption. Despite US threats to impose new sanctions, Russia does not intend to change plans for the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. This was stated by spokesman for the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov on Thursday, May 28. “Any sanction exercises” the Kremlin considers “nothing more than a manifestation of unfair competition and actions that are contrary to international law.” On May 27, US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell announced that the United States was ready to impose new sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. These plans "are met with bipartisan approval" and the corresponding bill “can go quickly despite the election campaign” in the United States, the diplomat said, who met with senators and congressmen in the United States a few days ago. Construction of Nord Stream 2 suspended due to US sanctions The construction of Nord Stream 2 is currently suspended due to US sanctions against European contractors that entered into force in December 2019. They include a ban for representatives of these companies to enter the United States, and freezing any assets in the country. Nord Stream 2 should stretch across the Baltic Sea in parallel with the already existing Nord Stream. Countries through the territorial waters of which a new gas pipeline passes (Finland, Sweden, Germany, Denmark) have allowed pipe laying. The USA and a number of European states oppose the construction of a gas pipeline. In their opinion, it will increase the dependence of Europe on Russian gas supplies.
