China condemns the adoption of the Hong Kong Autonomy Act in the United States, a statement on the Chinese Foreign Ministry website said. Earlier, U.S. leader Donald Trump said he had signed the law and presidential decree to hold Beijing accountable for its actions against Hong Kong. The document provides for the imposition of sanctions against foreign individuals and companies involved in violation of the British-Chinese declaration of 1984 and the main law of the PRC, which determines the position of this region as a special administrative region of the country. It is emphasized that “in order to protect its own legitimate interests, Beijing will take the necessary retaliatory measures and impose sanctions against US citizens and American organizations related to this”. In addition, according to the statement of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the PRC is ready to counteract foreign interference in Hong Kong affairs, and any attempts by the United States to impede the implementation of the national security law are doomed to failure. It is emphasized that “US plans to impede the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Act will never succeed”. The Chinese side once again called on Washington to “correct its mistakes and not enact the so-called Hong Kong Autonomy Act”, as well as stop any interference in the country’s internal affairs.
