France, Russia and the United States requested convening the council meeting. Members of the UN Security Council called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to observe the new ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh during the meeting on the situation in the disputed region. Gathering at the UN headquarters in New York, the Security Council held a closed discussion of the fighting that began on September 27 and claimed the lives of hundreds. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres once again called for the parties to observe the new ceasefire during the meeting convened at the request of council members France, Russia and the United States. Russia, which currently chairs the council on a rotating basis, is working on a statement calling for compliance with the ceasefire, diplomats said. It will also call on Armenia and Azerbaijan to resume negotiations with the Minsk Group assistance. Members of the Security Council are expected to agree on a text this week. Russia, France and the United States are Minsk Group co-chairmen; the group was created by the OSCE in 1992 to seek a solution to this territorial conflict.
