He made the corresponding statement on Wednesday night, December 16, following a virtual discussion with the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. "Undersecretary of State Bigan confirmed the strong support of the United States for the loud calls of the Belarusian people to have their voice heard in determining the fate of the country," the statement reads. Bigan also called for free elections in Belarus and the release of all those unjustly detained at the protests. The discussion with the participation of Bigan and Tikhanovskaya was organized by an American foundation called the German Marshall Fund, dedicated to strengthening transatlantic relations. Svetlana Tikhanovskaya spent the last days in Berlin, where she met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Belarusian diaspora, and took part in an interfaith prayer for peace in Belarus.
