The MP from the Party of National Unity (PUN) Octavian Tsicu intends appealing to the Constitutional Court regarding the law on the status of the Russian language, which was adopted by the MPs from the PSRM and the parliamentary group Pentru Moldova. At a press conference on December 18, he said he doubted the constitutionality of this decision. Tsicu criticized the vote in the Moldovan parliament on December 16, noting that it was held without observing the necessary procedures and is not being transparent. “This attack on Moldova’s democracy exacerbates opposition in society and heightens the state’s international isolation. The lack of transparency and disregard for the opinions of specialized institutions call into question the constitutionality of [the decisions taken],” he said. The leader of the National Unity Party also criticized the parliamentary vote on the state budget law, the adoption of amendments to the Audiovisual Services Code and the so-called “billion law”. “In accordance with the obligations undertaken before the citizens of Moldova, and to protect democratic and national values, we considered it necessary to appeal to the Constitutional Court regarding the law on the functioning of languages in the territory of Moldova, which was adopted by the parliamentary majority,” Tsicu added. Recall, the deputies from the PSRM and the parliamentary group Pentru Moldova approved in the final reading the state budget, the fiscal policy for the next year and the social and health insurance budgets, on the night of December 16. In addition, the informal parliamentary majority adopted bills that abolished the ban on retransmission of Russian news in Moldova, obliged state institutions to respond to citizens in Russian, lowered the retirement age and abolished “the billion law”. The MPs from the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) announced that they intend to apply to the Constitutional Court with a request to declare unconstitutional the bills adopted by the MPs from the PSRM and the parliamentary group Pentru Moldova.
