The situation in Syunik region has escalated after the signing of a trilateral peace agreement between Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan.
In the event of an attack on the territory of Armenia, Russia will intervene in the situation. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this. This was announced on Sunday, December 27, by the Republic’s Public Television.
“In the event of an invasion of Syunik (the southern region of Armenia bordering on Azerbaijan – ed.), Not only the armed forces of Armenia will intervene. Russia will intervene,” the head of government promised.
According to Pashinyan, the residents of the region fear that the deployment of new combat posts in Azerbaijan after the transfer of part of the lands of Nagorno-Karabakh to Baku’s control will threaten their security.
“The most important issue is security. As a result of actions on the border, the war in Syunik was suppressed. Not only today, but in general, since now we are located so that in the event of an encroachment against Syunik, not only the armed forces of Armenia, but also Russia will intervene. This was done only for this, “Pashinyan said.
Also, the prime minister noted that the ongoing processes do not exclude discussions on border issues.
“For example, at the moment, issues related to about 20 land plots are being discussed,” Pashinyan said.
After the signing of a trilateral peace agreement between Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan, Baku passed part of the territories that were under the control of Yerevan, including the Zangelan region, bordering the Syunik region. This brought the Armenian-Azerbaijani border much closer to the Armenian settlements and caused discontent among local residents. The heads of the communities of Syunik region announced a threat to security for the region and demanded the resignation of Pashinyan and the government.
Earlier, six Armenian soldiers were found in Nagorno-Karabakh, who were considered missing for 70 days. They were found in the territories that came under Azerbaijan control.
