On March 9, President Maia Sandu and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the political situation in Moldova by phone. As Sandu posted on Facebook, Merkel assured her that the German authorities will closely monitor the developments in Moldova and support people's efforts to build a democratic state. As Sandu said, during a conversation with Merkel, she thanked for the support that Germany provides to Moldova in various fields, including for the assistance provided in the fight against the pandemic and in the functioning of the COVAX platform, which made it possible for Moldova to receive free vaccines against the coronavirus. The heads of the two states also discussed the political situation in Moldova. “We talked about the political crisis in Moldova. I emphasized that the citizens of the country want real reforms, the rule of law and punishment of corrupt officials. These reforms can only be carried out by the parliament, which represents the will of the people. Ms. Merkel assured me that she will closely follow the development of events in Moldova, and Germany will continue to support the efforts of the people in building a democratic and just society,” Sandu said. As Chancellor's spokesman Steffen Seibert noted, Merkel “appreciated the desire for pro-European reforms” in the republic and said that “the federal government will continue to support the reform course.” Note, Sandu had several meetings with German Chancellor Angela Merkel before, the last one was in Berlin in 2019 when she was prime minister.
