Home / Politics / Sandu on a Third Presidential Term: “I Have Never Violated the Constitution”
President Maia Sandu has rejected claims that she intends to amend the Constitution in order to run for a third presidential term.
According to her, the limitation on the number of mandates is an important democratic principle that she has always respected, zdg.md reports.
“I have never violated the Constitution. I believe in democracy. I consider it correct that the number of presidential mandates is limited by the Constitution. All talks suggesting that I want to change this are lies and disinformation spread by people who do not respect citizens,” Sandu said in an interview with journalist Nicolae Chicu.
The head of state stressed that after completing her second term she does not intend to leave public life and will continue working for the country.
“I will remain close to the Republic of Moldova. I will contribute in any form to ensuring that the country moves forward, primarily to becoming a member of the European Union. But even after joining the EU, the work will not end. We will not sit idle and wait for prosperity to fall from the sky. We will still have to work,” the president said.
Sandu also dismissed rumors that she plans to leave the country after her mandate ends.
“Why should I leave Moldova? I work for this country with full dedication and love. I returned home because I love this country and did not want it to be governed by thieves and traitors. That is why I entered politics. And after I leave office, I do not want this to happen again. On the contrary, I want to help build a state with strong institutions, where honest people can live and work at home,” she added.
Maia Sandu was re-elected for a second presidential term in 2024. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, one person cannot serve more than two consecutive presidential terms, which means that her participation in future presidential elections as a candidate is currently not permitted.
