U.S. senators want to impose stiff new sanctions on Russia over its meddling in U.S. elections. Targets of the sanctions would include Russian banks, new sovereign debt and liquefied natural gas projects outside of Russia. February, 13, U.S. senators introduced a bill on Wednesday that would impose stiff new sanctions on Russia over its meddling in U.S. elections and aggression against Ukraine. It imposes several strict measures against Russian banking, oil and gas sectors, as well as against the Russian sovereign debt. The updated version of the bill “On Protecting American Security from Kremlin Aggression” was introduced by Democratic Senators Ben Cardin, Bob Menendez and Jeanne Shaheen as well as Republican Senators Lindsey Graham and Cory Gardner. In the office of Bob Menendez, they noted that the current version of the bill is tougher than the one that the senators unsuccessfully tried to pass through the Senate last year. New package of U.S. sanctions against Moscow Targets of the sanctions would include: Russian banks that support efforts to interfere in foreign elections. Sanctions are to impose several strict measures on Russia’s oil and gas sector, including energy projects outside of Russia, cyber sector, new sovereign debt, and individuals deemed to “facilitate illicit and corrupt activities, directly or indirectly, on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin”, Reuters reports. Lindsey Graham: Our goal is to change the status quo  Before the bill becomes the law it should be passed by Congress and support of the President Trump. Bob Menendez said that Congress wanted action to respond to the humanitarian disaster in Syria, where Russia backs President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine and “the steady erosion of international norms”. “One thing is increasingly clear: Moscow will continue to push until it meets genuine resistance,” Menendez said. “Our goal is to change the status quo and impose meaningful sanctions and measures against Putin’s Russia,” Graham said in a statement. “Putin should cease and desist meddling in the U.S. electoral process, halt cyberattacks on American infrastructure, remove Russia from Ukraine, and stop efforts to create chaos in Syria”, he stressed.
