President of Abkhazia, Raul Khajimba, has resigned. The decision  was made to maintain stability in the republic, he said. This was announced on January 12. When addressing to the citizens, Khajimba noted he made “the decision to resign to prevent further confrontation in the Abkhaz society, which has suffered many trials and tragedies.” The parliament of Abkhazia has to approve the president’s resignation. Recall that on January 9, opposition supporters seized the building of the presidential administration of Abkhazia and demanded his resignation. On January 11, the Supreme Court of Abkhazia canceled the results of the presidential election. On January 12, the Central Election Commission (CEC) scheduled new elections for current March, 22. The Chairman of the CEC Tamaz Gogia noted that the CEC does not agree with the decision of the Supreme Court of Abkhazia, but recognizes it and executes it. At the same time, the commission does not exclude appeal of the verdict, Gogia added.
