The British Foreign Ministry stated the secret inauguration has undermined the reputation of Alexander Lukashenko, and the EU has called for a repeat election. Great Britain and the European Union do not recognize Alexander Lukashenko as the legitimate president of Belarus. The corresponding statements were made on Thursday, September 24. “Today Lukashenko’s secret inauguration in Minsk further undermines his reputation. His rigged elections appeared a deception of the Belarusian people,” British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab wrote on Twitter. In turn, the EU also did not recognize the legitimacy of Lukashenko and called for new free elections in Belarus under the OSCE supervision. Recall, Lukashenka held a secret inauguration ceremony, which caused a new wave of protests in the country. In addition, a number of states (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia, Germany, Canada, Poland and the United States) refused to recognize Lukashenko a legitimate president.
