The current president explained why he needed to run as an independent candidate in the presidential elections. Igor Dodon said that in accordance with the Moldovan legislation, the President of the country cannot be a party member, and therefore, he could not be nominated as a political party candidate while he is an acting President, noi.md reports. “According to the RM’s legislation, the president of the country cannot be a party member. Thus, he cannot be nominated by a political party and cannot be a candidate from a political party. The situation is different with other candidates who are not acting presidents and can be candidates from any political formation. Therefore, according to the legislation of the Republic of Moldova, the only option was to be an independent candidate, but I believe that this is the right approach, I am the candidate of all citizens of the Republic of Moldova and the Party of Socialists, the most powerful political party that I have created and that I headed. I am an informal leader of this political party, which obviously backs me up in this electoral race,” Dodon explained in an interview with Agerpres.
