Sandu: Moldova is Ready to Be Left without Gas

Moldova will stop receiving gas from the Russian Federation this winter if the Moscow and Kyiv do not reach an agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Ukraine, said Prime Minister Maia Sandu. “We are preparing for such a scenario. Citizens do not need to worry, but they need to know that there is such an opportunity,” Sandu said. The Prime Minister says that a solution has been found to overcome the problem if it arises: “The solution is to buy and store gas in Ukraine, but the storage capacities that Ukraine can offer are not enough for the whole territory of Moldova.” At the same time, Maia Sandu assured that the construction of the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline will be completed in the Republic of Moldova by the end of this year, and in Romania by March-April 2020. “This is the deadline indicated by our partners. The system will not work this winter,” Sandu said.
