Moldova is buying gas from Russian Gazprom at a price at which it could buy reverse gas from Ukraine. If Moldova will not be able to receive Russian gas due to the absence of a new Russian contract with Ukraine on transit, Chisinau is ready to buy reverse gas from Kyiv, stated the Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu during the hearings in the Committee of the European Parliament on Foreign Affairs in Brussels, Ukrinform reports. “As for energy security it is an extremely difficult issue for us. Moldova depends on Russian gas. As you know, there is a discussion between Russia and Ukraine about the obstacles to gas transit through Ukraine. If this happens and no solution is found before the end of this year, then Moldova will not be able to receive gas from Russia if the relevant agreement is not signed,” she said. Sandu reminded that the Moldovan government is actively working with the Romanian government to speed up the implementation of the Iasi-Chisinau gas pipeline project, but these works will not be completed very quickly. “Gas supply is a technical problem, but it is also an economic problem. Today we buy gas from Gazprom at a price at which we could buy it in Ukraine, the one that it receives through the reverse system,” Sandu said. She said that Moldova is also working on a project of interconnection of national electric networks and energy companies with the European Union system through Romania. “This project is progressing, and we have the support of some international financial institutions. It will also take some time, but somewhere in the next five years we will have alternatives in the energy sector,” the Moldovan Prime Minister added. Korrespondent.net
